Sierra Negra Volcano and Chico Volcano

Description

The Sierra Negra is considered the oldest of Isabela volcanoes, it boiler is 10km in diameter and is the second largest active volcanic boiler in the world. The Chico Volcano is located northeast of the Sierra Negra Volcano at an altitude of 860 meters above sea level. Where you can see a moon landscape of frish lava Flow and the island Fernandina and the canal bolivar betwen isabela and fernandina island aswell as birds as the catle heron (bubulcus ibis) and the endemic Galapagos Rale (pachai).

On the return trip we visited the a lagoon with flamingos bahama ente, shalorupus gallinula.

  • Viewpoint of the crater Sierra Negra, from where you can see the magnitude of the boiler. The island Fernandina, and the canal bolivar.
  • Trail to the Chico Volcano, with views of lava flows, cracks and active fumaroles.
  • Unique landscapes, mixture of arid areas with endemic vegetation.

Access

  • It is mandatory to make the visit with a naturalist guide authorized by the National Park Galapagos.
  • The total distance of this tour is 18 km
  • The tour lasts approximately 5 hours.

Recommendations

  • Wear light clothes, hat, water and sunscreen.
  • Wear comfortable shoes to walk on rocky terrain.
  • Do not pick up or touch rocks.
  • Keep the area clean and respect the park rules
